SPD 508 Classroom Audit and Analysis
Directions: Study the topic Resources related to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and review the “Traditional Classroom Layout and Instruction Description.” Complete each section below to analyze the classroom design and instructional practices and develop an action plan to transform the classroom into a more inclusive learning environment.
Part 1: Classroom Audit
Address each question below based upon what you see in the classroom layout and what you know about the instructional practices in the traditional classroom.
Grade Band: |
Based on the physical design of the classroom, including seating arrangements and access to materials and resources, identify three barriers to accessibility for students with exceptionalities. In 1-2 sentences, explain how each barrier could prevent students with exceptionalities from accessing the general education curriculum or participating in classroom activities.
Barrier 1:
Barrier 2:
Barrier 3:

Thinking about the instructional practices employed in the classroom, identify two barriers to student engagement. In 1-2 sentences, explain how each barrier could prevent students with exceptionalities from accessing the general education curriculum or participating in classroom activities.

Thinking about the instructional practices employed in the classroom, identify two barriers to student learning based upon how content is presented. In 1-2 sentences, explain how each barrier could prevent students with exceptionalities from accessing the general education curriculum or participating in classroom activities.

Thinking about the instructional practices employed in the classroom, identify two barriers students face in expressing what they have learned. In 1-2 sentences, explain how each barrier could prevent students with exceptionalities from accessing the general education curriculum or participating in classroom activities.

Part 2: Action Plan
Review the “High-Leverage Practices” topic Resources and conduct your own research related to Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Develop a plan for addressing the physical classroom environment and implementing research-based instructional best practices to meet the diverse needs of students with exceptionalities in an inclusive classroom environment.

Physical Classroom Design
Use the design tool of your choice to create a visual of an inclusive classroom layout that reflects research-based best practices for meeting the diverse needs of students with and without exceptionalities. Note: You may utilize AI tools to generate the visual of the classroom layout. If used, be sure to cite the AI tool; however, it does not count as one of your scholarly resources. Paste a copy of the visual or a link to the visual in the space below.
Rationale: In 200-250 words, explain why you designed the physical classroom layout the way you did. Include a discussion of how your design addresses the barriers to accessibility noted in Part 1.
|
Multiple Means of Engagement:
Based on the barriers you identified in Part 1, identify three research-based best practices you will employ to provide students with exceptionalities with multiple means of engagement. In 200-250 words, summarize these best practices and explain how they address the previously identified barriers.
|
Multiple Means of Representation:
Based on the barriers you identified in Part 1, identify three research-based best practices you will employ to provide students with exceptionalities with multiple means of representation. In 200-250 words, summarize these best practices and explain how they address the previously identified barriers.
|
Multiple Means of Action and Expression:
Based on the barriers you identified in Part 1, identify three research-based best practices you will employ to provide students with exceptionalities with multiple means of action and expression. In 200-250 words, summarize these best practices and explain how they address the previously identified barriers.
|
Culturally Responsive Classroom:
In 100-150 words, identify two strategies you could employ to create a culturally responsive classroom environment. Support your selections by citing relevant research.
|
Part 3: References
Support the assignment by citing a minimum of three scholarly resources.

Traditional Classroom Layout and Instruction Description
- Imagine walking into a classroom with neat rows of desks aligned facing the front, where a chalkboard or whiteboard dominates the space behind the teacher’s desk.
- The students sit quietly, each with a textbook open, awaiting the teacher’s instructions.
- The teacher stands at the front of the room, delivering a lecture, speaking to the entire class at once. There is little movement or interaction among students.
- The classroom is focused on the teacher’s instruction, with minimal student engagement or collaboration.
- Students are taking notes, and throughout the lecture the same three students raise their hands to answer and ask questions.
- Assignments are given, and students are expected to work independently at their desks.
- Differentiated learning strategies, peer discussions, and hands-on activities are absent, creating a uniform experience for all students regardless of their individual needs or abilities.
