LIBS 300 Introduction to Liberal Studies Research Proposal Project

Purpose: To actively engage liberal studies by devising a research proposal that demonstrates an awareness of the research process as informed by interdisciplinary rigor and centered on a topic of study that fits the student’s particular interests.

Task: As the Liberal Studies program is designed, students may only complete the program after designing and undertaking a semester-long, independent project which specifically speaks to the student’s primary and secondary course specializations and their academic interests. The project is intended to establish a first foundational step toward those ends.

Creating and completing a scholarly project is a multiple step process. The research proposal serves to fulfill a few of the beginning component:

  • one discovers a topic of interest
  • one conducts a literature review of the scholarly work done on the In doing so, one becomes mindful on where knowledge exists and is well established and where ideas are either underdeveloped, poorly developed, or absent.
  • one uses the knowledge gained from the literature review to devise a research
  • again considering the previous scholarship discovered during the literature review, one devises a methodological means for attempting to address the research question being asked.

At the proposal stage, one is simply offering a description of what would be done and why those choices are the ones being carried out. Think of it in terms of a scholarly journal article; the proposal seeks to create the introduction and the methods sections. One will not actually carry out the full project at this time (that’s what LIBS 400 is for). Rather, one is simply proposing the project as being a possibility. Ideally, throughout one’s remaining coursework, one can keep the proposal in mind, tweaking its scope ever more toward one’s eventual academic and personal aims.

Hopefully, you’ve already begun this process in that your annotated bibliography project is guiding you to devising a research question and beginning your literature review of the various scholarships that already exist with regard to your project’s scope. While you may choose to change your focus, you are welcomed and encouraged to build upon the work you’ve already accomplished.

For this project, you will create a research proposal in which you will essentially prepare yourself for the capstone experience. The proposal, limited to no more than five pages, will:

  • give a description of the topic (including how an interdisciplinary approach constructively applies)
  • give a brief summary of the scholarly literature that already exists
  • offer the question or questions your study will address
  • and offer a brief explanation of the research process (the methods you’d intend to use for answering those questions).
  • Include a full works cited for all resources used in building the lit review

Expectations: Your results are to be typed, proofread, and expressed in a clear, concise manner. Remember, it is your responsibility to be descriptive and complete in your synopses and explanations. The idea behind this (and all assignments) is to show your understanding of course material. Simply pasting the contents of your annotated bibliography project without adapting it to this format or using what is directly pulled of a website demonstrates neither knowledge nor critical contemplation of the class material. The project will be evaluated from this perspective.

Your project, as with all your coursework, must meet all standards of academic honesty.
